I changed my mind

Because what’s a renovation where you don’t change your plan (again)

I have not done this renovation exactly as I’d hoped.

This is, for all intents and purposes, not even a full renovation. But I’ve had a pretty large sense of responsibility towards not my just myself and my husband and our family, but also towards the house itself.

In architecture this is known as site-specific design (grounding the house in its location and architecture).

Being site-specific is imperative if you want to achieve good design. It doesn’t mean the location or existing architecture dictate the design, it just means the design is informed by its very real circumstances and surroundings.

In this case, our 20-year old builder grade bathroom is 1) in a modest neighborhood (think houses around 2000-2500 square feet, pretty close together, small yards, all spec-built by builders), 2) is used often by little kids who aren’t particularly good at being careful (hello, flooded bathroom), and while our house is nice, it’s not clad in marble and $4000 fixtures.

This means we need to scale our vision and our dream to match our home.

Why I changed my mind
